Supporting this vision in 2017 was our goal to implement wellness programs at 100 percent of our facilities by 2020. During the year, 70 percent of our locations with 50 or more employees had a wellness program. The slight decline from 2016 was due to acquired locations that had not yet fully implemented a program.
We have encouraged and supported the creation of local wellness programs for almost 20 years to:
- Foster greater employee engagement in the process;
- Provide a mechanism for active disease management;
- Reduce health care costs in the United States;
- Reduce the incidence of chronic diseases among our people;
- Lower productivity costs;
- Provide ways for our people’s families to become involved and educated;
- Keep our people healthy, productive and at work; and
- Improve quality of life after retirement.
WELLNESSColombia employees go the distance for health
The employee health and wellness program in Colombia is running strong. In 2017, 45 employees participated in the Medellin Maratón de las Flores (Marathon of the Flowers), running a variety of distances that ranged from a 5K to a full marathon. Their participation was another chapter in the successful health and wellness campaign underway at our facilities throughout Colombia.
Between 2016 and 2017, Colombian employees participating in a sport increased to 27 percent from 11 percent. The employees are also eating healthier, with 71 percent reporting that they have adopted healthy food habits compared to 26 percent in 2016. As a result, employees with a healthy body weight increased to 56 percent in 2017 compared to 14 percent the prior year.
Our approach to wellness is based on our Four Wellness Absolutes—nutrition, exercise, health screenings and mindfulness/stress—that research identified as key to our people’s overall well-being. Every wellness program and tool we offer addresses one or more of these absolutes to help our people benefit from lifestyle improvements.
Each of our sites is expected to have a wellness committee and wellness champion to communicate our wellness messages and implement the various global, regional and local programs. The corporate PPG Wellness Council and the wellness subcommittee to our corporate Sustainability Committee set the overall strategy and track our progress globally.
Guiding our sites to wellness excellence and recognizing superior performance is the following suite of tools:
Our sites can register their wellness activities and track progress over time using the scorecard, providing accountability through visibility. A point value is assigned for each wellness program offered, such as a weight-loss challenge, health screening, fitness class and better sleep program. Some programs receive extra points for higher participation rates. In 2017, 35 percent of our locations achieved the highest level—diamond—on the scorecard scale.
In 2018, we will undertake a thorough analysis of our wellness strategy, programs and communications materials to ensure increased global alignment and focus.

WELLNESSEmployees rock it for wellness
When it comes to wellness, employees at our site in Cleveland, Ohio, rocked it.
For six weeks in 2017, employees were encouraged to get their minds and bodies moving by painting, hiding and finding close to 100 cheerful rocks to bring an unexpected bright spot to the finder’s day. Hiding spots included the refrigerator, drinking fountain, indoor plants, copy machine, parking lot, locker room and cafeteria register.
Wrote one employee, “Last night I found your beautiful rock by the tulips, and it really brightened my day and made my shift start out on the right track. Thank you!”
