We are working with our suppliers to deliver sustainably-advantaged products that are more durable, create less waste during use and enhance the sustainability of the products to which they are applied. We are also actively engaged with our customers to ensure we are creating products and services that help them meet their sustainability goals, such as increased energy efficiency and reduced emissions and waste.
Minimizing the footprint of our own operations is an ongoing focus. We continue to incorporate sustainability across the entire product development process, from selecting environmentally friendly raw materials to evaluating how a new product’s formulation and production impact our energy and water use, emissions and waste. We are increasing the sustainability of our existing production processes through rapid improvement events, upgraded equipment, alternative technologies, best practice sharing and more. We are also improving the efficiency of transporting products from our manufacturing sites to our stores and customers.
Our environment, health and safety (EHS) policy provides the guidelines under which we manufacture, market and distribute products globally in a manner that protects our people, neighbors, customers and the environment. The policy incorporates elements from several voluntary global industry initiatives in which we are a participant, including the RESPONSIBLE CARE® program and COATINGS CARE® initiative.
Our locations implement the policy through our global EHS management system, ensuring consistent execution against our EHS standards, sustainability goals and strategies worldwide. The system also enables us to track our progress on a location, business and global level. (See the Health and Safety section for additional information.)
In 2018, we had 55 locations certified to the ISO 14001:2015 standard for environmental management systems. Our corporate environmental management system was also certified to the standard.
Our sustainability goals drive not only our performance but that of our customers. These updated goals better represent the sustainability challenges that we currently face following significant divestitures and acquisitions over the past few years.
