Emissions

The composition of our air emissions is unique to each PPG facility due to the varying products produced and manufacturing processes used. For all emissions, we are focused on reduction through improved operating practices and, where necessary, emissions control equipment.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

We are reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions primarily by lowering our energy consumption (see the Energy section).

In 2016, we implemented a new goal to reduce our GHG intensity by 25 percent by 2020 from a 2012 baseline. This follows our achieving the initial intensity goal in only three years due to energy efficiency throughout our company and a current product portfolio that requires less energy to manufacture compared to our portfolio when the goal was set in 2012.

Our total GHG emissions intensity in 2016 decreased 14 percent compared to 2015 and 29 percent over the 2012 baseline. Our direct and indirect emissions decreased 18 percent and 10 percent, respectively, compared to the prior year. A major factor behind the significant declines and the early achievement of our 2020 goal was the sale of our energy-intensive flat glass and European fiber glass businesses in 2016.

Without these two businesses included in the data, our total GHG emissions intensity decreased 12 percent during 2016 and 24 percent compared to 2012. We had a 15 percent reduction in direct emissions and a 10 percent reduction in indirect emissions compared to 2015.

Robotics enhance efficiency at Milan facility

Each year, employees at our automotive refinish plant in Milan, Italy, manually opened and emptied sacks of powder into processing tanks. The operation provided challenges in containing particulates from the powder.

In 2016, the plant installed an automated system that uses a robot to handle, open and empty the powder sacks into a special hopper. The powder is then transported to the processing area through a piping system.

In addition to minimizing particulates and ergonomic risks associated with manual handling, the system saves nearly $250,000 annually in production costs.
