Engagement in Action

We care about the communities where our employees live and work, and we are committed to our role as a responsible business, employer and neighbor. This commitment is reflected in the support we provide to projects that focus on community sustainability and education, as well as the volunteer efforts of our people.

Community Sustainability

We provide support to local organizations and programs that meet our communities’ essential needs, promote environmental sustainability, foster economic development and assist in disaster relief efforts.

The centerpiece of our community sustainability efforts is our COLORFUL COMMUNITIES™ initiative. Through a series of projects around the world, our employee volunteers, financial contributions and products are transforming buildings and community spaces to enhance our communities.

Colorful Communities—Tianjin, China

PPG held its first Colorful Communities activity in China at the Tianjin TEDA Art Center in September 2015. As part of the new global community-engagement initiative, nearly 70 volunteers from the PPG plant in Tianjin helped decorate interior walls and paint bright murals in the soon-to-open Color Classroom of the art center. PPG also donated the MASTER’S MARK® paint to the center before the activity.

Colorful Communities—Busan, South Korea

The hillside village of Gamchun in Busan, Korea, is well-known for the colorful facades, sculptures and artwork that fill its alleys and add brightness for residents and visitors to enjoy. We proudly added to that rich history in 2015 through the volunteer efforts of more than 100 employee volunteers and family members from our local manufacturing facility. All came together to create an expansive and colorful mural decorating the outer walls of a local child-care center.

Colorful Communities—Cieszyn, Poland

Nearly 30 volunteers from our industrial coatings plant in Cieszyn, Poland, and their families grabbed hammers, paint brushes and other tools of the trade to transform a worn and aging playground into an active community hub. We also donated more than $10,000 and gallons of DEKORAL® brand paints and Drewnochron varnishes to restore and expand the site with a new swing set, carousel and safety mats. The new playground opened in September 2015.

Colorful Communities—San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico

A project in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico, brightened the auditorium at Mahatma Gandhi secondary school with the help of more than 50 employee volunteers and family members and about 396 gallons (1,500 liters) of donated PPG paint products. While some of the volunteers were completing the revitalization project, others hosted educational events for the students. One activity was a science fair where students learned from PPG experts about our efforts to minimize waste, ensure safety procedures at our facilities and apply color theory in the production of our paints and coatings.

Nepal Disaster Relief

In response to the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Gorkha district of Nepal on April 25, 2015, our people around the world donated to the 2015 Nepal Earthquake Recovery Fund established by Give2Asia. PPG and the PPG Foundation matched our people’s donations to these relief efforts, resulting in a combined $20,130 of support.

Education

Our local communities have a need for a skilled workforce in research and development, manufacturing, information technology and industries related to science, technology, engineering and math professions. Our support of educational youth programs is designed to spark interest in these areas and open minds to new possibilities.

Science Buddies

As a Science Buddies supporter, the PPG Foundation helps sustain this innovative online resource that is visited annually by nearly 17 million K-12 students, parents and teachers around the world. Dedicated to helping students build their literacy and interest in science and technology, Science Buddies provides science project ideas, personalized learning tools, educational resources and an online community of science and engineering role models who advise students and inspire them to pursue further education in science and technology.

National Society of Black Engineers

For three weeks in 2015, hundreds of elementary school students participated in an engaging educational program run by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and supported by the PPG Foundation. The program, called Summer Engineering Experience for Kids, paired underrepresented minority students with NSBE engineering students and technical professionals. Together, they explored engineering concepts through fun problem-solving activities, hands-on projects and design competitions.

Employee Engagement

We empower our people to make an impact on the causes that are most important to them through volunteer opportunities and giving programs.

During 2015, thousands of our people worldwide ventured out into their communities and pursued individual passions or teamed up with colleagues and families to clean parks, serve meals at local food banks, renovate community centers, read to school children and more. In the United States and Canada, PPG and the PPG Foundation provided $450,000 in grants to 630 organizations where our people volunteered their time.

Australia

A team of PPG volunteers spent a week helping aboriginal students from two remote bush communities in Far North Queensland build the skills and confidence needed to achieve their vocational and personal goals. The centerpiece of the effort was the students’ creation of a music video and related mural crafted with paint and supplies donated by PPG.
